Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary

Agartala, the capital of Tripura, is abundant in scenic beauty. The beauty of Agartala is doubled by the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary. Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary is known to possess exquisite flora and fauna. The sanctuary with its many species of flora and fauna, with a botanical garden and a zoological park, orchid garden and beautiful lakes surrounded by lush greenery present a beautiful sight of nature’s beauty to the visitors.

Location of Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary

Located around 35 kms from Agartala in a place named Bishalgarh the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary was established in the year 1987 as a measure to protect the wildlife of the region. The sanctuary spreads across an area of 18.53 sq kms. The terrain of the sanctuary is bound by lush greenery on all sides and lakes. The terrain is beautiful year round except for the two humid summer months of March and April. The beautiful rubber plantations with the lakes and the greenery are bound to grab the attention of the visitors.

Flora and Fauna of Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary

sepahijalaThe Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary is very rich in vegetation. In the sanctuary Agar and Nageshwar flowers could be found along with around 456 species of plants, including dicotyledons and monocotyledons. Tree lovers can see the chief trees found in this sanctuary like Sal, Chamal, Garjan, Kanak, Pichla, Kurcha, Awla, Amlakhi, Bahera, Hargaja and Bamboo among others. Rauwalfia serpentine and other endemic species are the important floral species found here and also the sanctuary has large amount of timber biomass in it.

Wildlife lovers would be pleased to see rare wildlife in the sanctuary as in the sanctuary one would be able to see rare species of crab eating mongoose, primates like spectacled langur, capped langur, Rhesus macaque, pigtailed macaque, animals like leopard, barking deer, jungle fowl, clouded leopard, civets wild pig and so on. Also in the sanctuary five species of primates are found. Presbytis or the spectacled langur, an endemic species of Tripura, is found in abundance here.The added visual incentive for the tourists is the famous spectacled monkey which is a rare species.

The sanctuary is a paradise for bird lovers as there are innumerable numbers of birds spotted in the sanctuary. The sanctuary boasts of about 150 species of birds which fly in during winter. One would also be lucky enough to spot migratory birds like the whistling teal, open billed stork and white ibis. The Sepahijala Lake can be seen with birds like moorhen, water cork, cranes flocking and floating in during the rainy and winter seasons.

Botanical garden in Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary

Other beautiful attractions of the sanctuary are a botanical garden and a zoological park inside the sanctuary. The zoological park is divided into five different sections namely carnivores, primates, reptiles, aviary and ungulate section having different species of each section. The Botanical Garden has various species of trees and plants along with 60 species of medicinal plants. The Sepahijala Zoological Park came into existence initially with the setting up of one deer park to protect the land from encroachment.

Lakes in the Sanctuary

In the sanctuary are located wonderful lakes like the Amrit Sagar and Abasarika. Boating facilities are available in the lakes for the tourists to enjoy. There is also a toy train which takes one around and deep into the sanctuary apart from the joy rides on elephants for the tourists. The beautiful rubber and coffee plantations in the sanctuary with the lake beyond also provide a beautiful picnic spot for tourists.

Accomodation in Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary

For the tourists there is a forest ‘Dak’ bungalow (Abasarika) and cottages run by the Forest Department inside the sanctuary. Also there are luxurious hotels in Agartala where one can stay during his visit.
